Catholics Punishes Priests but Protect Bishops' Sex Abuse Coverups

By Jacqueline L. Salmon / The Washington Post
It's getting a little uncomfortable for Catholic Bishop Carlos Sevilla these days. Several times in recent months, the Yakima, Wash., clergyman has had to defend himself against accusations that he concealed sexual misconduct by priests and employees. In one case, a priest who had worked in the diocese was convicted of felony abuse for fondling a 14-year-old girl. In another case, Sevilla hired a former seminarian after the man was charged with viewing child pornography. Sevilla is an example of the conundrum facing the U.S. Catholic Church as it struggles anew with the sex-abuse scandal, which Pope Benedict XVI brought up during his U.S. visit last month. Since then, activists have launched letter-writing campaigns and petition drives to try to push the pope into taking action against bishops who they believe have moved slowly to stop predator priests. "What is the pope going to do now? If it's nothing, then that is a terrible thing," said Terry McKiernan, president of BishopAccountablity.org, based in the Boston area. "There has been no public action by the Vatican since the pope's visit."

'Homosexuals Comprise 30 to 50 Percent of Catholic Clergy'

Dr. Edwin S. Zolik is professor emeritus
of psychology, DePaul University, Chicago

[C]elibacy is not correlated with sexual abuse of children. The sexual abuse was the result of homosexual rapes and attacks (90 percent) and pedophilia (10 percent) (see "Bless Me Father for I Have Sinned: Perspectives on Sexual Abuse Committed by Roman Catholic Priests," edited by Thomas G. Plante). It is estimated by knowledgeable church officials that homosexuals comprise 30 to 50 percent of Catholic clergy (see "The Changing Face of the Priesthood," by the Rev. Donald Cozzens). . . . While in flight to the United States, the pope said, "I would not speak at this moment about homosexuality, but pedophilia, which is another thing." This delimitation of abuse to the pedophiliacs unfortunately has not been followed up on by the press. Pedophilia cannot be used to cover all sexual abuse as most hierarchs and clerics are prone and desirous to do.

'Best Santa Ever' Arrested in N.J. on Homosexual Charges

NEWARK, N.J. -- A rare international alert seeking a man shown in dozens of raw child porn images quickly led to the arrest of a small-time actor, who painted faces at children's parties and performed as "the best Santa Claus anyone has ever seen." Wayne Nelson Corliss told authorities he had sex with three boys in Thailand six years ago, an experience he described as "euphoria," a prosecutor said Thursday at Corliss' first court appearance. The arrest of the bespectacled, gray-haired 58-year-old at his Union City apartment late Wednesday capped a two-day global manhunt, just the second time Interpol has sought the public's help in tracking down a suspected pedophile. He is believed to have sexually abused at least three boys thought to have been 6 to 10 years old, according to the international police agency.

R&B Singer R. Kelly Child Pornography Trial Set to Begin

CHICAGO -- It seemed for a while as if R. Kelly's day in court might never come. But after six years of repeated delays, jury selection is set to begin Friday in the Grammy-winning R&B singer's trial on child pornography charges, prompted by a videotape allegedly showing Kelly having sex with a girl as young as 13. Prosecutors, though, will have a unique challenge: The alleged victim, now 23, says it wasn't her. And Kelly's attorneys - including Ed Genson, who often represents the rich and famous - haven't admitted it's Kelly in the video. Kelly has settled three lawsuits accusing him of having sex with underage girls, filed in 1997, 2001 and 2002. In the third suit, the woman claimed that she began having sex with Kelly when she was 16, and that he forced her to have an abortion.

Quaker-Pagan Congregations: Hundreds of Pagans Call Quakerism Home

The liberal end of the Society of Friends has long had members who denied God's existence or Jesus' divinity. Now hundreds of pagans call Quakerism home. Across the board, the number of Quakers is dwindling, to roughly 100,000 in the U.S. But if Quakerism continues to catch on among the estimated half million pagans in the U.S., those who embrace both traditions predict that could reverse the Quakers' downward trend. Still, some Quakers worry about losing their own traditions through the process of accepting new ones. In the last decade, this dual faith has sprung up around the country, including Quaker-pagan gatherings, seminars, an extensive presence on the Internet, and even explicitly Quaker-pagan congregations. There may be only several hundred Quaker pagans, but among American Quakers, their presence can be distinctly felt.

Judge Refuses to Halt Homosexual Priest's Trial

FLEMINGTON -- A former Milford priest wanted to postpone his second trial on child sex abuse charges, his lawyer argued Monday, because proceeding with the case now may be too soon after the pope's apology for the clergy sex abuse scandals. "His concern was that people might rush to judgment and not focus on his case in particular," said Peter Abatemarco, the Hunterdon County public defender representing John M. Banko, who already has a 2002 conviction for a separate child sex abuse case. Despite Banko's concern, Judge Roger F. Mahon rejected Abatemarco's request for an adjournment Monday. Banko, 62, is accused of abusing a boy who was younger than 16 years old between September 1994 and May 1995. Banko is already serving a 15-year sentence for sexually molesting an altar boy after Sunday Mass twice in the 1990s.

Victims Group Protests Lack of Notice About Homosexual Priest

A small group of clergy sexual abuse survivors met outside the Catholic Diocese of Arlington yesterday to push church officials for more information about a Connecticut priest thought to be living in Northern Virginia. Representatives of the regional offices of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) say they are upset that diocesan officials didn't tell the public when they learned in March that the Rev. Stephen Foley, 66, was living in Chantilly. The Archdiocese of Hartford has made payments to 12 men who said they were victims of Foley's, including a single $599,000 settlement in March.

Interpol Launches Manhunt for Homosexual Pedophile

LYON, France -- Interpol launched a worldwide appeal to the public Tuesday to help identify a gay suspected of sexually abusing young boys from Southeast Asia -- hoping the rare move will lead to a quick arrest. It was only the second time that the international police agency has appealed directly to the public for help in identifying a suspected pedophile. An arrest was made shortly after the first time last October. The suspect in the latest case is a white man, shown with gray, thinning hair in photos released by Interpol. He appeared to be in his late 40s or early 50s in the images. In interviews at the agency’s headquarters in Lyon, France, Interpol officials said they had recovered photos of the man that allegedly show him sexually abusing at least three boys, apparently between the ages of 6 and 10. The boys appear to be from Southeast Asia — though Interpol officials declined to specify any possible countries.

Austrian Police: Suspect's Dungeon Plans Date Back to 1978

AMSTETTEN, Austria -- An Austrian man came up with the idea for a windowless warren under his apartment building years before locking his daughter in a cell secured by sophisticated electronics, locks and a half-ton door, authorities said Monday. Josef Fritzl may have been plotting the design of the basement dungeon six years before authorities say he took his daughter Elisabeth captive in 1984 when she was 18, investigators said. He is accused of detaining and raping her for 24 years, and fathering seven children with her.
