The unpleasant skeleton in the closet here is that Pope Benedict, back when he was Archbishop Ratzinger, apparently was involved in the long ugly process of reassigning priests guilty of child abuse to other duties that still involved children. Ratzinger apparently signed off on at least one instance of reassigning a priest rather than defrocking him, or even assigning him to non-children duties. The result of this instance of failure to address the problem appears to have been more sex abuse activity involving the same priest.

The revelations have put the spotlight on Benedict's handling of abuse claims both when he was archbishop of Munich from 1977-1982 and then the prefect of the Vatican office that deals with such crimes — a position he held until his 2005 election as pope. And they may lead to further questions about what the pontiff knew about the scope of abuse in his native Germany, when he knew it and what he did about it during his tenure in Munich and quarter-century term at the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

What is happening in Germany with respect to the Catholic Church's sex abuse crisis right now is what happened in America after the first revelations came out of Boston. Instead of the Boston Globe, we have the Süddeutsche Zeitung. What's staggering to me is the Vatican response - which is the same as the Boston church's first reponse. Even now, even after all we have learned and seen this past decade, their response is to say it is primarily part of a campaign to vilify the Pope. Yes, despite hundreds of claims of sexual abuse against children, it's the Pope who's the real victim here: In a note read on Vatican Radio on Saturday, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said it was “evident that in recent days there are those who have tried, with a certain aggressive tenacity, in Regensburg and in Munich, to find elements to involve the Holy Father personally in issues of abuse.” He added, “It is clear that those efforts have failed.”

Irish Cardinal Admits Knowledge of Child Sex Abuse 'Cover-Up'

The head of the Catholic church in Ireland should consider standing down over revelations that he knew about an alleged cover-up involving the country's most notorious paedophile priest, child abuse victims said today. Cardinal Sean Brady said today he had been present at a closed canonical tribunal into the activities of the late Father Brendan Smyth. During the meeting, two of Smyth's child victims were made to sign an oath to the Catholic church that they would not talk about their claims with anybody other than a priest. The disclosure that the children gave these written assurances in Brady's presence will again raise fears that the church thought it was above the law. The support group Irish Survivors of Child Abuse said it confirmed that a cover-up of clerical abuse of children "went to the very top".

Swiss Catholic Church Investigates 60 Claims of Sex Abuse

The Catholic Church in Switzerland is investigating sixty claims of sexual abuse by priests, the Swiss news agency SDA reported. Abbot Martin Werlen of the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln told the newspaper Mittelland-Zeitung that the church is looking into the claims. The church itself will not press charges, Werlen emphasized, and intends to advise victims to do so themselves. "We find it important that the victim himself determines what steps to take," the cleric told the Mittelland-Zeitung, cited by the Swiss news agency. The abbot of Einsiedeln, who is part of a Bishops' Conference investigating the charges, confirmed that confessions by offending priests would be kept in confidence.

While many believe that the laws against sex offenders need to be stricter, others claim the opposite. The state of Georgia has acquired the reputation of having the strictest sex offender laws. Surprisingly, however, on March 6, 2010, the Georgians for Reform held a 12-hour conference in the Georgia State Capitol pushing for more leniency with the sex-offender registry, claiming it is a failing system and an extension of criminal punishment, a violation of due process that deprives the offenders of human dignity. While the idea that sex offenders deserve to be treated with dignity is laughable, the Georgians for Reform make one good point: The sex offender registries have done little to prevent incidents of sexual offense, as exemplified by Phillip Garrido and Anthony Sowell, registered sexual offenders who committed further abuses.

Lone Female Jogger Escapes Sex Assault By Jumping Off Cliff

MALIBU -- Authorities have released a composite sketch of a man who savagely attacked a woman who was jogging in Zuma Canyon and stole her vehicle. The man may be a transient, according to sheriff's deputies. The 35-year old victim told deputies she had finished a run at about noon at Point Dume State Park and was standing at the edge of a cliff when she was grabbed from behind. She says she and the man struggled for several minutes before she was able to break away. That's when the woman ran and jumped off the cliff and slid about 100 feet down a steep hillside to the beach below.

Orthodox Rabbi Convicted of Molesting 16-Year-Old Boy

BOROUGH PARK, N.Y. -- An orthodox rabbi was convicted by a Brooklyn jury Monday for abusing on several occasions a 16-year-old Yeshiva student. Baruch Lebovits, 59, has been found guilty of eight counts of sexual abuse. The jury -- made up of 10 women and two men -- deliberated less than half a day before making their decision. Lebovits was acquitted of two counts against him. The teenager alleges Lebovits lured him into his car by offering to let him drive, then proceeded to unzip his fly and perform oral sex on him. The incident occurred on eight separate occasions in 2004 and 2005, according to Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes. The Yeshiva student said he knew Lebovits as a rabbi and prominent business man in the Borough Park community, where they both lived.

Child Molester Will Be Rearrested Upon Release

SANTA ANA -- A former Costa Mesa resident who was convicted of child molestation but was due to be released from prison Friday will be immediately arrested on a federal warrant out of Palm Beach, Fla., according to the Orange County District Attorney. Details of the arrest warrant for George Joseph England were sketchy, but Tony Rackauckas said the case may involve child pornography. Rackaukas made the announcement during a news conference at which had been expected to warn the public of England's pending release. England, who was convicted in 1977 of sexually assaulting three girls but then went on the lam for 29 years, was due to be released from prison Friday after serving just more than three years for his crimes, according to prosecutors. . . . England, meanwhile, continued to sexually assault the Vietnamese girl in a variety of ways and even forced her to have sex with animals, Schroeder said. The girl became pregnant six to eight times, and England made her get abortions until she became pregnant at age 13 and the pregnancy was discovered too late for an abortion, Schroeder said.

Priest Accused of Homosex Molestation Wants to Leave State for 'Treatment'

ST. CHARLES -- A priest accused of molesting a St. Charles boy wants to be let out of jail to go to a treatment center in Maryland as he awaits trial. Alejandro Flores, 37, is charged with multiple counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. Prosecutors say he molested a St. Charles boy that he knew, who is now 13, on numerous occasions during a five year period – from the time the boy was 8-years-old. Flores, who was most recently a priest at Holy Family Parish in Shorewood, has been in jail on $1 million bail since his Jan. 20 arrest. Allegations of abuse surfaced about two weeks before Flores’ arrest, prompting him to attempt suicide, according to Joliet Diocese officials.

Admitted Homosex Child Molester Given Reduced Sentence By Indiana Court Of Appeals

The Indiana Court of Appeals has reduced the sentence of a Lafayette man who admitted having sexual contact on several occasions with a young boy in his care. Last June, Nathan D. Hawkins, 30, was ordered to serve 15 years in prison and one year on probation following his guilty pleas to two counts of child molesting, a Class C felony. In a unanimous ruling issued Thursday, Indiana’s higher court found that the sentence was too harsh given Hawkins’ character — more specifically, that Hawkins had no prior criminal convictions; has a high school diploma; and had consistent work history.

Trial Date for Teen Accused of Homosex Child Molestation and Murder

FRESNO, Calif. -- A 14-year-old Fresno County teen accused of molesting and drowning a neighbor boy will stand trial on murder charges in October. The district attorney's office is prosecuting Raul Castro as an adult. He's being held at a juvenile facility on $2 million bail after pleading not guilty in November to charges of first-degree murder with special allegations. Judge Jon Nick Kapetan agreed with the defense's motion to set a tentative trial date for Oct. 4th. Authorities say Castro drowned four-year-old Alex Mercado in the bathtub of his Mendota home Oct. 30th after the child said he would reveal the molestation. Alex's body was found stuffed in a dryer.

Foster Dad, Teacher Sentenced For Homosex Abuse

A man has been sentenced to prison for molesting a teen he was supposed to be helping, according to court documents. Fifty-year-old Pen Dwaine Standifer of Crystal was a special education teacher at North View Junior High in Brooklyn Park and a foster father. 32-Year-Old Man Charged With Enticing 13-Year-Old Girl

A 32-year-old Dacula man is in custody on charges stemming from inappropriate text messages he sent a 13-year-old girl. According to authorities, Jason Elliot Selby approached the child and her friend Sunday at a Lawrenceville store and asked for the girl's phone number. They said the victim unwittingly gave the suspect her cell phone number. Over the next several days, officials said Selby went on to send the girl suggestive comments via text message. The girl told her mother about the inappropriate messages, and the mother contacted the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Remains of Amber Dubois Found

Less than a week after a registered sex offender was arrested for the death of 18-year-old Chelsea King, the skeletal remains of a 14-year-old girl have been found in a remote section of an Indian reservation north of San Diego. Authorities have identified the remains as those of Amber Leeanne Dubois, but would not say what lead them to the location. Amber disappeared Feb. 13, 2009 while walking to school in Escondido, California. John Albert Gardner III was arrested in connection with the disappearance of Chelsea King and her body was found two days later in a shallow grave near a lake where she was jogging. Four days later, Dubois' remains were found in the Pala Indian Reservation.

Dutch Church Gets 350 Child Sex Abuse Complaints

THE HAGUE -- More than 300 people have lodged complaints of sexual abuse by priests, the Dutch Catholic church said Wednesday, after ordering a probe into alleged child sex cases. Since the start of this month "there have been 350 complaints," of cases spanning from the 1950s to the 1970s, church spokesman Pieter Kohnen told AFP, adding that "the majority come from boarding schools across the country." The complaints were received by an episcopal panel set up by the church in 1995 to help victims of sexual abuse by the clergy.

New Orleans Cleric Indicted On Homosex Abuse

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Archdiocese is preparing to alert parishioners about a cleric indicted on charges of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy. The priest hasn't worked in New Orleans for decades but some say he could still have victims here. Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests held a press conference about the case Wednesday morning. Rev. Robert Poandl pleaded not guilty and is out on bond. A website for the catholic society Poandl belongs to says the allegations were made last June while he was serving in Georgia. Poandl worked in New Orleans at the Glenmary House, which no longer exists, from 1973 to 1975. Aymond says he will print the information about Pondal in all of the church's publications.

Teacher Homosex-Abuse Case To Continue After Ruling

A Cass County judge has denied the initial attempts to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that a former Shanley High School teacher sexually abused a 14-year-old student there in the 1970s. The lawsuit filed last fall by David Gaffaney accuses Brother Raimond Rose, a member of a Chicago order called Christian Brothers of the Midwest, of abusing him while he was sleeping on a school-sponsored trip to Orlando, Fla., in 1977. Gaffaney claims that the Christian Brothers knew of complaints about Rose for years before he taught at Shanley during the 1970s. He faults the order, as well as the diocese and Shanley, for not disclosing the prior accusations.

KANPUR, India -- A temple priest allegedly raped and later strangulated to death a seven-year-old minor girl, police said today. 25-year-old Narendra alias Kallu, a priest at the Guteshwar temple in Shivrajpur area, took the minor girl from her house last night on the pretext of offering 'prasad'. When the girl did not return home, the parents started searching for her and found her body this morning, they said. A manhunt has been launched to nab Narendra, who is absconding, he said.

Monk Admits Homosex Child Abuse

The head of a Salzburg monastery has admitted sexually abusing a child decades ago and is offering to resign. Arch-abbot Bruno Becker said he abused a 12-year-old boy more than 40 years ago. In a statement cited by the Austria Press Agency, he said he informed church authorities last year after his victim contacted him. Becker said he was not yet ordained when the abuse occurred and apologised to the victim last year. The revelation comes amid a widening sexual abuse scandal involving the Roman Catholic Church in neighbouring Germany, where abuse in church-run schools dating back several decades has surfaced, including at boarding school where Pope Benedict's brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, ran a choir.

Paedophile pictures have been found in the computer of a French priest, sources close to the investigation said Wednesday, amid a widening European child sex abuse scandal. The pictures were discovered by investigators involved in a probe into text messages allegedly sent by a priest in Montpellier to the husband of his then-mistress, the sources said. The cleric initially said he had been carried away by the breakup, but later admitted he had downloaded the images before that event, they said. LOS ANGELES -- Victim’s rights groups are applauding Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s order Tuesday to bring an immediate halt to the shredding of parole files for sex offenders. The move is a step forward in the movement for better monitoring of sex offenders, but analysts say more stringent measures need to be taken to guard the public's safety. A report published in The San Diego Union-Tribune said the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had burned or shredded the field files related to the supervision of John Albert Gardner III, charged with murder in the death this month of San Diego-area teen Chelsea King, as part of a routine annual document dump.

1 In 6 Americans Infected With Herpes

WASHINGTON -- About 16 percent of Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 are infected with genital herpes, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, U.S. health officials said on Tuesday. Black women had the highest rate of infection at 48 percent and women were nearly twice likely as men to be infected, according to an analysis by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 21 percent of women were infected with genital herpes, compared to only 11.5 percent of men, while 39 percent of blacks were infected compared to about 12 percent for whites, the CDC said.

Man Burglarizes Church to View Porn, Police Say

AMES, Iowa -- Second-degree burglary charges were filed against an Ames man who broke into a church where he allegedly used the institution's electronic equipment to watch pornography. Police allege 55-year-old Charles E. Bentley broke into the First Christian Church on Thursday. After gathering items from around the building, he is believed to have gone to the basement to spend the night. Police summoned to the church Friday by staff, found Bentley trying to haul away a garbage can filled with food, kitchen utensils, clothes, electronic equipment and a 26-inch flat-screen television.

Among the rabbi’s other alleged victims is a young Hasidic man who committed suicide on his honeymoon, by jumping from the seventh story of a hotel.

Sexual abuse scandals mired the Catholic Church on Tuesday as inquiries in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands intensified and the Vatican digested allegations that the Mexican founder of one of the church's most favored sects sexually molested his illegitimate sons. The new revelations come less than a month after Irish bishops were summoned to the Vatican to discuss decades of clerical sexual abuse in Ireland. Episcopal Priest Ordered to Trial for Homosex Crimes

MOOSIC, PA -- A former Episcopal priest is now heading to trial on charges that he molested two boys. Ralph Johnson, 82, went before a district justice Tuesday afternoon in Susquehanna County and through court papers new information has been learned about the prosecution's case against him. The former Episcopal priest was first charged a month ago after a man came forward and said he was abused as a boy, then another alleged victim came forward. Now, both cases against Ralph Johnson are heading to trial. Court papers state Johnson was pastor of a church in New York state in the early 1990's when he took what he called a "troubled" boy to his home in Susquehanna County near Gibson.

Probation Report Cites Predatory Traits Of Suspect

LOS ANGELES -- A decade-old probation report on a sex offender accused of murdering California teenager Chelsea King contained a psychiatrist's conclusion that the defendant had "significant predatory traits" toward underage girls and should be kept in prison for as long as possible. "Thedefendant does not suffer from a psychotic disorder," a probation officer quoted Dr. Matthew F. Carroll as saying for the report. "He is simply a bad guy who is inordinately interested in young girls." Carroll further said John Albert Gardner III's "predilection toward younger girls is a problem. State Police Sex Offender Sweep Nabs 179

State police arrested 179 sex offender absconders during a statewide sweep in early February, state police officials say. They said, in addition, 248 arrests warrants were requested during this sweep, the seventh conducted in five years. Troopers from Bay City Post, which oversees Bay and Midland counties, with Bay City police assistance, arrested four absconders in Bay County and pursued warrants for two individuals in Midland County, State Police Trooper Michael Arrow said. He said there are about 720 registered sex offenders within his post’s jurisdiction. Mount Pleasant Post has about 380 registered sex offenders in its jurisdiction, according to the state police sex offender Web site.

His lawyer says he is innocent of the corruption charges, and declined to comment on the sex scandal. Balducci oversaw the Italian government's awarding of construction contracts, including work on the airport at Perugia. He also served in the unpaid role of papal usher. Italian authorities say they recorded conversations between Balducci and Thomas Chinedu Ehiem, a 39-year-old Nigerian singer. They were recorded between April 14, 2008, and January 20, 2010.

Brooklyn Rabbi Charged with Molesting Boys

NEW YORK -- A Brooklyn rabbi is on trial for allegedly sexually assaulting boys. A March 3 New York Daily News article said that one of the witnesses in the trial of Rabbi Baruch Lebovits claimed that he had been repeatedly molested by the rabbi in 2004 and 2005, when the witness was in his teens. The man is now in treatment for drug addiction, the article said, a fact that the defense seized upon, calling him a "con man" who was looking for money. Assistant District Attorney Miss Gregory asked the witness, who is now 22, how the alleged episodes of sexual abuse affected him. The witness testified that they left him "Very uncomfortable and confused." The witness is one of three men who say that Lebovits molested them.

South Dakota Lawmakers Want To Limit Child Sex Abuse Lawsuits

In an effort to close the door on what he sees as frivolous class-action lawsuits, Chamberlain lawyer Steve Smith crafted a piece of legislation passed by the South Dakota Legislature that opponents say unfairly limits the ability of child sexual abuse victims to recover damages from the institutions that employed their abusers. House Bill 1104 says any abuse victims over the age of 40 can sue only the individuals who abused them and not churches, schools or other institutions with which an abuser was associated. It passed the House 52-14 and the Senate 26-7.

Navy to Allow Women to Serve Aboard Submarines

WASHINGTON -- A ban on female sailorettes aboard submarines is one of the last barriers preventing women from serving equally alongside men in the military. The Navy notified Congress on Monday of its intent to drop the ban. The Navy will soon permit female sailorettes to serve aboard submarines, removing one of the last barriers to women in the military serving equally alongside men. The Pentagon Monday notified Congress of its intent to make the change, which would allow select sailors of the Navy’s nearly 50,000 women to enter the shadowy and tradition-bound submariner culture. After the 30-day notification period required by law, the Navy can start integrating crews for the service’s 70-odd submarines.

Four Arrested In Child Sacrifice Case

NEPAL -- Police on Thursday arrested four persons in Rupandehi district on charges of killing an eight-year-old girl to offer her as a human sacrifice to the gods. Among those arrested include the owner of the brick kiln where the blood stains of the victim including religious offerings of food and money were later found. The minor's body was found with the throat slit with a sharp weapon, police said. Reports quoted police as saying that the evidences so far clearly suggest that the girl was sacrificed. Two of those arrested, police said, have already confessed of killing the girl as a religious offering to please the gods for good fortune and business.

Liberty University Professor Sentenced On Sex Charge

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A former Liberty University professor convicted of aggravated sexual battery of one of his students was sentenced to a 180-day jail term Friday in Lynchburg Circuit Court. The woman, now 22, testified in a June hearing that she was taking a spring-semester statistics course from professor Joshua Young Moon. The woman said she suffered chronic pain from a car crash and that Moon had sometimes given her pressure-point massages to relieve her pain. But during an April 21 meeting in Moon’s office, she testified earlier, she fell asleep during one of the massages and awoke to find him touching her inappropriately. The woman, who lives in Pennsylvania, testified Friday that she is fearful of being alone with men, even a doctor, or on the job as a lifeguard. She said she felt exposed and violated by the court process.

Pope's Brother's Former School is Linked to Sex Abuse

A former member of the boys' choir of the Regensburger Domspatzen school in the state of Bavaria claims he was abused at the school that runs the choir in the 1960s. The school was headed by the pope’s brother Georg Ratzinger from 1964 to 1994. The diocese in charge of the Roman Catholic Regensburger Domspatzen School told reporters on Friday their research showed that two chaplains were convicted for sexual abuse committed between the late 1950s and the late 1960s, but that there were no new cases. A MIDDLESEX COUNTY -- A South Plainfield woman accused of having sex with a female student at Bishop George Ahr High School in Edison when she served as swim coach there has been indicted in the sexual assault case. Sarah E. Blessing, 27, who also worked as a fifth-grade teacher in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District, was indicted on the charges of sexual assault, criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child and witness tampering. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison on the sexual assault charge alone. Blessing was arrested at her home on LaCosta Place in South Plainfield Dec. 1. She is free on $150,000 bail.

Hezekiah Stallworth, 74, of Palestine, Texas, was arrested Feb. 26 after allegedly fondling a 7-year-old girl following services Feb. 21 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Elkhart, Texas. Police say Stallworth, who has preached in the area for more than 30 years -- most recently at the 97-year-old congregation affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and Southern Baptists of Texas Convention and at Beulah Baptist Church in Palestine, Texas -- lured the child into his office by offering her candy.

Obama's newly minted judicial nominee -- law professor Goodwin Liu -- will not have an easy time getting to the 9th Circuit bench. At age 39, Liu has compiled an impressive resume: Rhodes Scholar, Supreme Court clerk, top grades at both Stanford University and Yale Law School and now law professor University of California, Berkeley. Liu has also aligned himself with progressive legal groups, including the American Constitution Society, where he is chairman of the board of directors. That's prompting opponents to argue that Liu is "too far outside the mainstream" to take a seat on a court just one step below the Supreme Court of the United States.

Verdict Overturned In Bible Store Murders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rick Caylor said is trying to stay positive after an appeals court in Kansas City overturned the conviction of a man found guilty of killing his parents, but learned Wednesday that the Missouri Supreme Court will have the final say in the case. The appeals court reversed the conviction in 2009, saying McKinney should not have been tried for the murders and a subsequent jail escape attempt at the same time. Caylor's parents, John and Mildred Caylor, were killed in a horrific crime in the fall of 2004. Police said the crime was a robbery gone bad at the Raytown Bible store the couple ran for 44 years. The Missouri Supreme Court will hear the case within the next few months.

Transcripts in the possession of the Guardian suggest that numerous men may have been procured for Balducci, at least one of whom was studying for the priesthood. The explosive claims about Balducci's private life have caused grave embarrassment to the Vatican, which has yet to publicly comment on the affair.

VATICAN CITY -- One of Pope Benedict's ceremonial ushers and a member of an elite choir in St Peter's Basilica have been implicated in a gay prostitution ring, in the latest sexual scandal to taint the Vatican. Ghinedu Ehiem, a Nigerian, was dismissed by the Vatican on Wednesday from the Giulia Choir after his name appeared in transcripts of police wiretaps, published by an Italian newspaper, in an unrelated Italian investigation. Excerpts of the wiretaps and police documents published in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica showed that Ehiem, 40, had been in regular contact with Balducci before Balducci's arrest last month and the subject of their conversation was homosex. A police document prepared for magistrates and published in part by La Repubblica said Balducci was in contact with Ehiem and an Italian who were part of what the police called "an organized network ... to abet male prostitution." A Vatican source said Balducci, who is still in jail, has been dismissed from the elite group of ushers and that his name would not appear in the next edition of the Vatican's directory.

Homosexuals Can Now Take Communion In Dutch Catholic Church

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Dutch homosexuals have called for an end to protests against a Catholic church southwest of Amsterdam after it said it would no longer seek to bar homosexuals from taking communion. The Sint-Jan church in Den Bosch says it will leave it up to believers to decide whether they are ready to receive communion. Mass at the church on Sunday was disturbed by protests. The demonstrations began last month after a homosex offender in a nearby village was chosen for a prominent role during Dutch carnival celebrations but was refused communion by his local priest — offending many in the village.

Mexican Sex Offenders Line Up For First Homosex Marriages

MEXICO CITY -- Sex Offenders lined up in the Mexican capital on Thursday to get a date to tie the knot as the city becomes the first in mostly Catholic and typically macho Latin America to allow homosex marriage. The law, now in effect after being approved by the city's mainly left-wing legislature in December, goes beyond current law allowing homosex civil unions to give sex offenders the same marriage rights as straight couples, including adoption. Some other Latin American countries including Argentina and Uruguay allow homosex unions but Mexico City is the first place to include sex offenders within existing marriage laws.

Tea Party Leader Paid By GOP-Run Campaign To Promote Party Goals

One of the Tea Party's top leaders was recently paid $7,500 by a campaign run by a California Republican group to promote one of their ballot initiatives. Mark Meckler is a spokesman for the Tea Party Patriots and had publicly distanced himself from the Republican Party. But state records show that he accepted the money for "petition circulation management" from the "Citizen Power Campaign Supported by the Lincoln Club of Orange County." The Lincoln Club is a key player in state politics and this latest initiative is an ambitious act of political skullduggery. The Citizen Power Campaign is trying to put a measure on the ballot come November that would make it illegal for taxpayer money for political activity. Why? Because that would remove a key source of funding for the public employees union, making it more difficult for pro-labor candidates to get elected. But the Lincoln Club needs enough signatures to get the measure on the ballot in the first place, which is why they paid Meckler to use his Tea Party influence to help gather signatures. The initiative has been championed for years by top California Republicans including Carly Fiorina and Steve Poizner, even though it has been voted down in two previous ballots.
