Dallas Mayor Open to Domestic Partner Benefits

Dallas could become the first city in Texas to offer insurance benefits to the same-sex partners of municipal employees. Mayor Pro Tem John Loza said he will propose such an initiative during the City Council’s budget discussions in late summer. If the council agrees, the benefits could be implemented on Oct. 1 when the new budget takes effect, he said. Mayor Laura Miller said that she would support the measure if the cost proves minimal. “I’m open to the idea of extending benefits to longtime domestic partners,” Miller said. “If there is not a substantial cost, I think that it could be accomplished fairly easily.” Posted by Editor at July 22, 2004 01:19 PM
