Police: Number of Homeless Sex Offenders Spikes

SAN DIEGO -- A police sergeant said the number of sex offenders in San Diego who are registering as homeless jumped 40 percent last year. San Diego Police Department Sgt. Mark Sullivan said he attributes the increase to tough new laws dictating where sex offenders can live. Sullivan testified during a forum at San Diego City Hall engineered by City Attorney Mike Aguirre. The city council recently approved the "Child Protection Act," which makes it illegal for registered sex offenders in San Diego from coming within 300 feet of places frequented by children. The ordinance does not apply to sex crimes committed before it was passed, officials said. According to Sullivan, there are 3,931 registered sex offenders in San Diego County, about 200 of whom are listed as transient. Read more...
