'Greedy, Hungry Monster' Sentenced to Die for East Bay Killings

OAKLAND -- A convicted murderer heard his victims' loved ones label him as a cowardly monster in court Monday before he was sentenced to die for killing three women and two teenage girls over three months in the East Bay in 1985. Anthony McKnight, 54, was convicted in September of five counts of first-degree murder and five special circumstances, including murder committed in the course of rape, sodomy and multiple murder. The same jury determined in October that he should die by lethal injection. Judge Jeffrey Horner of Alameda County Superior Court seconded that decision Monday, saying there was overwhelming evidence that McKnight deserved the death penalty. "These victims were not merely murdered, they were butchered," Horner said. McKnight murdered Betty Stuart, 22; Diane Stone, 17; Talita Dixon, 13; Monique Davis, 18; and Beverly Bryant, 24. Sandra Frost, a friend of Dixon's family, said the teenager was "devoured by a very evil, selfish, greedy, hungry monster."
